Poconos

March 12, 2017 by Ryan Harris

Another weekend of looking for places to stay in my Historic Hotels of America book led us to Skytop Lodge in the Poconos.  It's one of those grand resorts that has TONS of activities (hiking, golf, a lake for swimming, tennis, indoor and outdoor pools, fishing, a spa, arcade games, and I'm sure the list continues).  I LOVE when I go to a hotel and get the schedule of activities throughout the day.  There was a cocktail making class at 4:00pm we made sure to show up for!  It happened to be particularly freezing when we went, so we didn't get to spend too much time outdoors.  I'd love to go back in the warmer weather and fully check out the grounds!

That same weekend, we came across a hidden gem, the Lost River Caverns.  This place screams old-timey roadside attraction.  It's been in operation since 1930 and houses quite possibly the craziest gift shop I've ever seen (and The Harrises have seen a lot of gift shops!).  The caverns themselves are beautiful with the stalagmites and stalactites that you've come to expect in cavern tours.  The tour is about a 40-minute informative walking tour (no strollers).  The tour ends back at the gift shop where you'll find everything you need to make jewelry and create a top notch rock collection.  This place truly feels special and something fun to do with the family!
